Stephanie Francis

Stephanie is a Wabanaki woman. Originally from Elsipogtog and now a member in Wolastokuk territory at Ekpahak. She is the mom of Kaya and an auntie to so many.

She is a traditional knowledge keeper/cultural carrier as well as a registered Social Worker and had centered her practice by using Two Eyed Seeing and a Spirit First Approach.

As a self published author, Stephanie has been using story telling as a main methodology in teaching young and old about the impacts of colonization.

Her stories inspire folks to look at their lives, their history and to dream of a better future.

Her message to educators is that we can all view the effects, with an Indigenous lens, and begin the healing in the classroom.

Understanding Disruptive Behaviours in the Classroom with an Indigenous Len

This presentation will begin with a reading of Bird in a Cage, which described the impacts of colonialism and trauma in a shame-free, blame-free manner. A quick review of the All My Relations Framework, introducing an indigenized explanation of the brain, it’s parts and their functions with respects to trauma. This will be to lead to the introduction of the Insular Cortex/Inner Grandma(kiju/MeMe). This will provide participants to understand how environmental factors can trigger a child’s nervous system, and how we begin to understand this from a place of love and compassion.
