Professor Emerita of the University of Saskatchewan

Dr. Marie Battiste is a citizen of Potlotek First Nations and has made Eskasoni her home, a recently retired now Professor Emerita of the University of Saskatchewan. With degrees from University of Maine Farmington, Harvard and Stanford Universities, Marie’s scholarly interests have expanded the production and dissemination of research and knowledge that transforms education through decolonization of education, the reconstruction and renewal of Indigenous knowledges, languages, and the reconciliation of self-determination of Indigenous Peoples in education and beyond. She continues research in a national study and 7 year SSHRC partnership grant advancing Indigenous knowledge, citizenship education and thinking historically in k-12 curriculum and teaching. She has published widely, contributing over 70 chapters to books, written 20 refereed journals, 19 technical reports and delivered lectures at universities, conferences, and communities in Canada and beyond. She has received multiple recognitions, including an Officer of the Order of Canada; an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; recipient of the Distinguished Academic Award from the Canadian Association of University Teachers; a distinguished researcher award from the University of Saskatchewan; and an INDSPIRE Award for her contributions in education. She has since received five honorary degrees: Mount Saint Vincent University; St. Mary’s University, University of Maine Farmington, Thomson Rivers University and University of Ottawa (2015). She and her partner Sakej (J. Youngblood) Henderson are grandparents of Jacoby, an award-winning Koju and Pow Wow dancer, and parents to a Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary to Indigenous Relations Jaime Battiste; an award winning online entrepreneur Mariah Sundaylace who is owner of Sundaylace Creations, and educational consultant Annie Wintersong.
